The European Commission is preparing a new strategy for European life sciences, which will be adopted in 2025. This was announced both in the 2024-29 political guidelines and in the competitiveness compass.
This strategy will address several sectors, with the aim of strengthening research and innovation in the life sciences sector in Europe, an area that studies all life on our planet, from microorganisms, plants, animals and humans to entire ecosystems. The goal is to promote innovation that can contribute to Europe's green and digital transitions, while ensuring that technologies are safe and widely used.
Life sciences can make Europe more competitive and help promote progress in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, energy, food, and biotechnology.
For decades, the EU has been a leader in this sector thanks to its solid knowledge base and know-how. But now we are losing ground compared to other global players when it comes to investment in research and innovation and turning them into real solutions. This is due to a number of challenges and obstacles such as complex regulations, scattered funding, and difficulties in bringing new products and services to market.
The European Commission has concluded the public consultation on the upcoming European strategy for life sciences. The call for contributions, open for four weeks on the “Have your say” portal, collected 794 responses from 28 countries in total: 20 EU countries, with the highest participation from Spain, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria; and 8 third countries, with the highest participation from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Switzerland.
Among the participants in this call for contributions were EU citizens and a wide range of stakeholders, including academic and research institutes, non-governmental organizations, businesses, business associations, and public authorities.
